Bernie is Professor of Children's Nursing at Edge Hill University (UK) and Clinical Professor at UTAS (Australia). Her work focuses on children's pain, particularly in relation to pain assessment as well as focusing on children with complex health care needs and their families. She's passionate about trying to make things better for children and their families. She uses arts-based methods with children to help them engage within research.

Her research interests focus on the experiences of patients and how person-centred approaches can both inform and transform healthcare. Children’s experiences and care that centres on the child and family are central concerns in her work.

Her research interests focus on children’s agency, their preparation for procedures and interventions and how they experience living with long-term conditions. Her research is based on qualitative research approaches and uses innovative methods which aim to facilitate the involvement of children and young people.
